Marilia Furman
Brazilian, born 1982
o ponto de ebulição | the boiling point,
Appears, Inverts - and Against,

At first glance, Marilia Furman's oeuvre is a formalistic examination of materials and their characteristics – bold and brash in form, understated in content. She uses stone, glass, metal, clay, wax, ice, and gelatin in her sculptures and installations, changing their shapes and exploring the inherent tensions, forces, and potentials of these media. While her works present a poetic play with materials, they also symbolically engage with mechanisms of political systems. Influenced by the circumstances of her native country, Furman refers in her practice to general aspects and problems of capitalism as well as to the specific political situation in South America.
