Marilla Palmer blends naturally occurring and manmade materials in such a way that they sometimes become indistinguishable. As she describes, “artifice and nature are uneasy bedfellows, but this has always been where my interest lies.” In her typical works of sculpture and paper-based collage, Palmer combines branches and velvet leaves, sequins and mushrooms, crystals and dead flowers. She has also made installations in which LED projections are directed towards rain showers, tree fungus, and tiny mirrors. The artist once jokingly said, “My studio looks like the day after a storm that somehow twirled together deep woods and a burlesque dressing room.” Her works, however, engage with more serious themes of death, decay, and glamour. Palmer’s influences include Jackson Pollock and Florine Stettheimer.
