Italian, 1926–2019
Since the 1960s, Marisa Merz (Turin, 1926) has always insisted on the importance of the making, by using traditional female techniques such as sewing and weaving in relation to the most diverse media like drawing, painting and installation art. The sole female exponent of the Arte Povera movement, Merz has been a protagonist of the Italian art scene since the 1960s. She has participated to historical exhibitions such as Arte Povera + Azioni Povere curated by Germano Celant at the Arsenali in Amalfi (1968). The recent exhibition titled Marisa Merz: The Sky is a Great Space was organized by the Metropolitan Breuer in New York and the Hammer Museum in Los Angeles in collaboration with the Merz Foundation (2017). Amongst her recent solo exhibitions are those at Macro, Rome (2016, with Mario Merz), Museo D’Arte Contemporanea Donnaregina, Naples (2007), Kunstmuseum, Winterthur, Switzerland (2003), the Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam (1996) and the Centre Pompidou in Paris (1994).
