Mark Arbeit
b. 1953
With over four decades of experience in the industry, Mark Arbeit has established himself as a master of fashion, portrait, and fine art photography. While studying at Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, California, he met the photographer Helmut Newton, beginning a 25-year mentorship and friendship. Upon finishing his studies, Arbeit moved to New York, where he worked in the studio of Irving Penn.
Arbeit began his own career in 1980 in Milan, shooting fashion and portrait editorial for various publications. In 1985, he settled in Paris and began working on his “In and Out of Focus” series,
in which he paired sharp-focus flowers with soft-focus female nudes. Continuing to work in editorial, Arbeit shot fashion for Vogue France and Marie Claire, and portraits for InStyle and Forbes. In 1991, he began his “Artist Atelier” series, photographing female nudes in artists’ studios around Paris.
Arbeit’s works are in the permanent collection of the Helmut Newton Foundation.
