Mark Jenkins
American, b. 1970
Sculptor and installation artist Mark Jenkins explores humans’ understanding of the world with his hyperrealistic sculptures that he places in the streets throughout Europe and the United States. Lifelike works such as Level Up (2019) acts as social commentary on our current culture, space, and the urban environment. A collaboration with Balenciaga in 2017 saw his works used in a store display; his 2018 art installation “Project 84,” consisting of 84 sculptures placed on top of the ITV buildings in the South Bank neighborhood in London, addressed the pervasiveness of male suicide in the United Kingdom. Self-taught, Jenkins developed a method of creating sculptures of animals and people using packing tape and plastic wrap in 2003. Whether exhibiting in the street or in a gallery, performance plays a central role in his interactive works which rely on the viewers’ response for their meaning.
