Mark Neville’s work subverts conventions of documentary films and photographs, and evinces his strong belief in “the social function of art to effect change in the real world.” Neville incorporates himself into communities across the globe—including the United States, United Kingdom, and Afghanistan—highlighting specific social milieus and emphasizing socioeconomic differences. In his images of marginalized communities, he tends to capture celebratory rituals instead of scenes of poverty. Neville also believes that the exhibition of his work is inherently political; in his solo exhibitions, he involves the photographed communities by bringing them into the gallery or installing the series in their neighborhoods.
