Mary Anne Kluth

As an obsessive student of the history of science, Mary Anne Kluth investigates the effects of gravity, momentum, and the various geometries of the geological world. She uses Action Painting techniques derived from Jackson Pollock and muted, cut-and-pasted watercolors to create realistic paintings of rock formations, petrification, volcanic eruptions, and other natural processes. By combining these two techniques, Kluth attempts to display the tension between the spontaneous and the controlled. She also explores these concerns in three dimensions, through large-scale installation of paper treatments similar to her 2-D works.
