Mary Temple works seamlessly between painting, sculpture, and drawing as she endeavors to distinguish truth and doubt. She is known for trompe l’oeil installations such as the ongoing site-specific series “Light Installations” (2002-) for which she paints light cast through an imaginary tree onto the gallery’s floor and walls, its frozen image giving the illusion that time has stopped. The passage of time also figures in “Currency” (2007-), for which Temple draws a political figure photographed in the news every day, summarizes the story with a caption, and scans and sends it to the presenting museum or gallery to print on tabloid-sized handmade paper and hang on the wall in a calendar format.
