Massoud Hayoun
American, b. 1987
Hayoun draws upon his Tunisian, Moroccan and Egyptian heritage to explore notions of belonging, identity and systems of power. For Hayoun, “Politics are personal - and the more people benefit from certain oppressive power structures, the less likely they are to notice…the degree to which all politics are personal.” Drawing upon his experience as an investigative journalist as well as his personal history, Hayoun's portraits celebrate the full gamut of society: sex workers, convicts and migrant labourers jostle with political and cultural revolutionaries and his beloved grandparents, all of whom are brought to life once more in vibrant shades of blue. Hayoun was born in 1987 in Los Angeles, where he continues to live and work.
