In his paintings, Matt McClune embraces unconventional materials as a means of reinterpreting elements of Color Field and monochrome painting. McClune works by mixing his own thinned, translucent acrylic paints, which he applies in gestural washes to supports that include copper, aluminum, and plastic sheeting. His paints’ subtle gradations allow light to interact with the industrial materials beneath, a confluence that produces luminous effects. Though born in Massachusetts, McClune now resides in the Burgundy region of France. This setting has influenced his practice; many of the colors that appear in his paintings are inspired by the striking seasonal light changes that occur in the famous wine region.
