Matt Wycoff
American, born 1980

Matt Wycoff is fascinated in the ways in which physical forms can communicate ideas and language. He creates abstract paintings, sculptures, and mixed-media works to question the assumption that abstract, formalist work has no content and is meant to be a pure aesthetic experience. Wycoff draws on the language of Minimalism with its muted colors, rigorous geometric shapes, and precise color planes, establishing a critical dialogue with artists like Frank Stella and Dan Flavin. He references the latter in his fluorescent light works, such as Untitled Sculpture 4 (2009).
