Biography

Circumventing formalism, Matthew Deleget’s conceptually based paintings break from conventional techniques as they find new ways to forge dialogues within art history. His “Vanitas” series features Baroque-style frames painted in solid colors; the frames conjure notions of Dutch vanitas painting, a style popular in the 16th and 17th centuries that featured tableaux of symbolic objects. Such work also acknowledges more modern movements, such as 20th-century monochrome painting, thus staging a dialogue between two distinct historical moments. For the 2014 Whitney Biennial, Deleget assembled a library of catalogues from bargain bins—many of them monographs by such artists as Alfred Jensen and Alfred Stieglitz—to comment on the shifting and often fickle valuation of historical figures and movements while simultaneously advocating for them. Deleget also co-runs Minus Space, an art gallery in Brooklyn that specializes in abstract and reductive art.
