Matthew F. Fisher
American, b. 1976
Matthew F. Fisher creates contemplative paintings that distill natural elements into symbolic forms, using a visual language shaped by recurring motifs—ocean waves, seashells, rock formations, seagulls, and celestial bodies. His stylized compositions merge figuration and abstraction, positioning landscape as a space for metaphysical reflection. Influenced by a lifelong engagement with printed material and digital imagery across cultures and time periods, Fisher treats each work as a meditation on permanence and impermanence. He builds his surfaces slowly, layering acrylic paint to create sculptural depth against flat, gradient backgrounds. This tension between material precision and pictorial stillness evokes both personal introspection and universal cycles. Fisher holds an MFA from Virginia Commonwealth University and a BFA from Columbus College of Art and Design. His practice bridges art historical traditions with contemporary approaches to image-making and symbolism.
