Matthew Sleeth
Australian, born 1972

Appropriating the visual language of advertising, popular culture, fashion, and design, Matthew Sleeth creates projects that blur the line between documentary approaches and constructed narratives. Working primarily in photography, but also in video, sculpture, printmaking, and installation, Sleeth creates fictitious scenarios of plausible scenes that raise questions about perception, interpretation, and expectation. “I want the viewer to be able to see my departure from the traditions of orthodox documentary,” Sleeth explains. “I want to engage with my times—to make works of art that grapple with social and political ideals.”
