Max Jansons’ intimate paintings navigate the transition between abstract forms and objects. Observing everyday life and using vintage techniques and materials—lead-primed linen, aged paint ground in oil, defunct pigments—Jansons paints to “experience the pleasures of seeing,” as he has said. His small-scale works, with muted and neutral colors, subtle forms and symbols, and elusive representation, demand patient observation. “In an age filled with a constant flow of images and media, a painting’s ability to create a slow and intimate experience is one of its greatest assets,” he says.
