Maxwell Hendler
American, born 1938

Maxwell Handler began his artistic career painting meticulous oils in a photorealistic style, later displaying elements of Pop, Minimalism, and Conceptual art in his images. He is best known, however, for the polished resin-on-wood paintings that he began producing in the ’90s and continues to make today. Hendler creates horizontal fields of solid and saturated color, layering opaque resin onto panels and sanding it down to a translucent sheen—a process that can take up to two months. In a range of square and rectangular shapes and sizes, Hendler’s complex monochrome surfaces have been described as riveting and sensual.
