Biography

Megan Rye is best known for her photorealistic oil paintings of modern warfare that deliberately subvert viewers’ expectations of her subjects. Rye sources imagery from over 2,000 photographs taken by her brother, who served in Iraq as a U.S. marine. These often present the quieter—even serene—moments of war: a soldier standing alone in arid, sun-soaked terrain, or stationary military vehicles basking in the golden glow of dawn. Using saturated colors and meticulous detail, Rye blurs the boundary between abstraction and reality, creating captivating images that portray the occasional beauty of war as well as its horrors.
