Meghan Petras draws on her background as a sculptor to reconfigure her paintings in three dimensions, often painting on un-stretched canvases and then stretching the compositions afterwards. She also cuts and re-sews her canvases to create seams, dislocations, and unlikely juxtapositions. Rich in color and movement, Petras’ work references a vast history of abstract art. She favors cartoonish forms and repetitive patterns, but behind her inviting canvases lays an inscrutability and sense of isolation. Petras also makes sculptures, ceramics, and rugs.
