Meiro Koizumi uses performance-based videos to nuance the binary opposition between public and private, an issue of particular importance in his native Japan. His practice centers around the construction of awkward or painful scenarios for his subjects—as the action plays out on film, he gradually interjects himself into the scenes, sometimes in the manner of a director and but at other times as a voyeur. In Human Opera XXX (2007), for example, a man recounts a personal tragedy, only to be interrupted and eventually drowned out by the artist himself.
