Michael Alexander
American, b. 1966
Sports, music, literature and art filled his formative years as he developed into an ambitious young man. At 17 Alexander was accepted to the prestigious School of Art at Carnegie Melon University. After graduation, he moved to Italy where he enrolled in painting classes at the Leonardo Da Vinci Art School. To support his education, he learned traditional Italian cooking ‘on-the-job’ at a popular restaurant near the Arno. After living in Europe for several years, Alexander returned to St Louis to attend Washington University for his MFA.
Alexander’s inspiration comes from many sources, including his experiences with nature, traveling, books, media, architecture and urban locales. He draws from all of these to create his work. “Abstract painting allows me total freedom of expression.” Jackson Pollock, Wassily Kandinsky, Richard Diebenkorn, and Gerhard Richter are Michael’s strongest influences. “I push the boundaries of visual strength by pulling color from layer to layer. My goal is for the finished piece to convey the passion I feel, as I create my work.” Michael also enjoys working in other types of mediums. He has created sculpture, mono-prints, etchings and collage. Alexander continues to exhibit in many juried gallery and museum shows. He is collected in private and public collections throughout the United States and in Europe. Michael is known for his bright abstract paintings. Color is an important aspect of his work, experimenting with natural pigments and mediums; his work is organic and intuitive. Michael maintains studios in St Louis, New York, and Southern California.
