Michael Frary was a leading figure in the Texas-based movement known as Lone Star Modernism. His mature style drew inspiration from Futurism and Surrealism, elements of which he applied to his figural paintings. Frary’s other subjects often included fantastical landscapes set over bodies of water, or impossible structures. Though many of these scenes were products of invention, they drew from the artist's personal experiences. For example, Frary studied architecture before he began his career in painting, spurring his affinity for precise draftsmanship. Frary also served in the Navy during World War II, and returned to the United States to work for Hollywood’s Goldwyn Studios, Paramount, and Universal.
