Michelle Carollo
American, born 1980

Excited by a desire to create architectural, illusionary compositions, Michelle Carollo combines three-dimensional objects with two-dimensional surfaces that interact across multiple planes. Carollo incorporates drawing, painting, and sculpture into her large-scale installations, which layer geometric painted surfaces with found materials, such as sheet metal, chains, and air conditioning tubes. Her installations are designed to encourage interaction; in her 2010 piece Blast, Carollo positioned her work around the staircase of a gallery with the intention to encourage viewers to walk up and down the stairs. Though visually complex, Carollo's installations employ limited (yet vibrant) color palettes and simplified shapes, ultimately based on modernist ideals.
