NOW AND THEN | Japanese Photography and Art,

Mika Ninagawa is a contemporary Japanese photographer with a distinctive style, characterized by its super-saturated colors and cinematic framing. Ninagawa was first trained as a graphic designer. Her recurring subjects include still lifes, goldfish, animals, and landscapes, though she is perhaps best known for her iconic renderings of flowers. These works explore themes of Japanese youth culture, narrative tropes, light’s effect on color, and the dark side of eroticism. Ninagawa also leads an active career as a commercial photographer for Japanese fashion publications, including editorials for Vogue and Harper’s Bazaar, and for her portraits of international celebrity figures. She is also responsible for directing and creating Alicia Keys’s Japanese music video “Girl on Fire” (2013).
