Milan Kunc, born in Prague in 1944, studied at the Prague Art Academy from 1964 to 1967. He emigrated to West Germany in 1969 and studied at the Düsseldorf Art Academy under Joseph Beuys and Gerhard Richter from 1970 to 1975. Kunc lived in Cologne, Rome, New York City and The Hague before returning to Prague in 2004. His painting is characterized by postmodernism, ironic and defiant socialist realism; "embarrassing realism", "punk pop", "East pop" with elements from advertising, photography, street art, comic art; melodramatic allegories.
