Min Zaw
Burmese, b. 1972
Min Zaw’s dazzling, chromatically intense paintings speak to Myanmar’s past and present. He is known for two distinct bodies of work: landscapes, particularly meditative scenes of mountains and temples, and portraits of ordinary people. Zaw adopts a graphically bold, minimal style with simple forms. His choice of eye-catching colors, such as magenta, cerulean, and violet, gives these traditional subjects a modern perspective. The characteristic textural effect of his work is achieved by crumpling paper before it is spray-painted with acrylic. Zaw completed a BA at the National University of Arts and Culture, Yangon, in 1998, and in 2002 he won the ASEAN Art Award. His work belongs to the public collections of the Fukuoka Asian Art Museum and the Singapore Art Museum.
