Minerva Cuevas
Mexican, b. 1975
Minerva Cuevas is a renowned Mexican conceptual artist known for her socially and politically engaged works. Her oeuvre encompasses film, installation, performance, and site-specific public interventions. The ongoing “Better Life Corporation (Mejar Vida Corp.)” (1998–present) project is one of Cuevas’s best-known series. Beginning with the anonymous distribution of goods such as seeds and subway tickets in Mexico City, it expanded into a variety of subversive acts including the production of fake student IDs and discounted bar codes for supermarket goods, all with the intention of exposing inequality and hardship. Cuevas is also known for her provocative rebranding campaigns critiquing companies’ track records on food production, labor practices, and the use of natural resources through murals and reworked packaging designs.
