Biography

Minsoo Lee’s bowls are made from slip cast porcelain, a technique traditionally used for mass-produced pottery. He creates sets of five-to-eight pieces, each made up of thin layers of porcelain that he pours into a plaster mold on a spinning wheel. Monochrome when viewed from the inside and outside, the vessels’ hair-thin colored layers become visible in a cross-sectional view, revealing Lee’s technique and interrupting the clean porcelain silhouettes. To further accentuate the accumulation of layers, Lee cuts geometric shapes from the lips of his bowls in a series dubbed “+, —”, which references the angular forms of the Korean written alphabet, Hangul.
