Mizue Sawano
Japanese, born 1941

Mizue Sawano paints bold and energetic paintings of flowers, and since the 1980s has primarily focused on depicting cherry blossoms in luminous pinks and reds. Her rhythmic brushwork seeks to transcend realism and technique in order to explore the essence of an idea. Described by Sawano as an “engagement and dialogue with nature,” her large compositions are at times ambiguous in structure but always dynamic and immersive. Sawano often incorporates elements such as lines and grids into her compositions to suggest light or movement.
