Toshikata Minuzo was a student of the prolific artist Yoshitoshi. He was greatly inspired by his teacher and echoed Yoshitoshi’s series of prints entitled Thirty Two Types of Women in 1888 with his own series, Thirty Six Beauties, in 1893. Toshikata also produced a number of very well received prints on the Sino-Japanese war. he was not limited to woodblock printing, as he studied ceramic painting under Shibatat Hoshu and continued his studies in this field after Hoshu’s death with Watanabe Shotei.
