Biography

Mladen Miljanović’s artworks are all either directly or obliquely preoccupied with his experience in military training and fighting the Yugoslav Wars. Miljanović, who doesn’t consider himself a political artist, told a journalist that “The not-so-distant past and the resulting present time, still damaged, are very conspicuous in my work”—first, he describes, as a means of introspection, and later as a metaphor for “problematic areas of human activity.” His works also address themes of social trauma, the loss of innocence, and the consequences of war. Miljanović, who enrolled in the Academy of Arts as a painter, has a multimedia practice that includes installation, video, and performance interventions.
