Monica Majoli

Monica Majoli's sexually explicit work explores identity, intimacy, and mortality. In 1999, when a close friend began frequenting gay sex clubs, Majoli began a project depicting men engaged in the fetishistic wearing of rubber body suits. To mimic the disembodied consciousness that she imagined the encased men must experience, she created her images using delicate washes of watercolor and gouache. The figures project a deep emptiness and isolation that Majoli finds personally moving, but they also have broader, symbolic significance.
