Monica Nydam is a painter whose representational images appear to have deteriorated, pixelated, or distorted—qualities that make the images seem abstract. For a recent series of paintings, Nydam placed an open call on Craigslist for images of beloved objects and received 45 files of a horse named Minnie, which the artist repainted as though the image were blurred or contained digital glitches. Her use of a subdued color palette articulate a theme of nostalgia, present elsewhere in Nydam’s works. Previous series also blend representation with abstraction in Nydam’s characteristically imprecise or deliberately messy style. Her subjects have included landscapes, text, old clothing, and suggestive views of anatomy.
