Monika Michalko

Monika Michalko was born in the Czech Republic in 1982 and raised in southern Germany. Her paintings and fabric works both use flat shapes to make up complex compositions that bring Klee and Miro to mind while retaining a Bohemian folkloric quality. They glow with high contrast colours which seems to provide heat from within: no wonder, when Michalko lived in Sri Lanka during 2018-19, she was struck by the colourful painting of facades, doors and vehicles being ‘such a part of everyday culture in Colombo that in some places I thought I was walking through my own pictures’ – such as, presumably, these two works from 2016.
