Monroe Hodder

Monroe Hodder

“The essence of my work is pure color, as Matisse understood it,” says painter Monroe Hodder, “‘color that must serve expression.’” To create her abstract oil paintings, Hodder begins by placing a radiant field of color on the canvas before adding transparent layers of pigment, grids, and geometric forms, and sometimes including representational imagery pulled from art history or urban life. The end result is not narrative, however, but rather an investigation of fantasy, memory, myth and the chaos of modern life. Hodder earned her MFA in painting at the San Francisco Art Institute, where, while working as an assistant to Manuel Neri, she encountered artists such as Clyfford Still and Mark Rothko.
