Mr. & Mrs. Cath are a husband and wife duo whose work merges the conceptual with the historical. Employing transparent balloon-animal figures as stand-ins for humans, the duo, consisting of Khloe and Philip Cath, creates faceless and formless characters that are imbued with a sculptural presence. Absorbing light but casting no shadow, the figures make for strangely alluring and poignant images whose dark backgrounds assume the quality of an Old Master still life. Motivated by scenes that appall rather than appeal, Mr. & Mrs. Cath address gang violence, the sexualization of children, and human trafficking in their art. Lust (2013), for example, stages a 1940s porn shoot in a style that is both sinister and comic. Through the inherent fragility and transparency of their balloons, the Caths’ figures become metaphors for the perils of human existence.
