Mrinalini Mukherjee
Indian, 1949–2015
Mrinalini Mukherjee (b.1949, Bombay – d.2015, New Delhi. Lived and worked in New Delhi) is one of India’s pre-eminent sculptors, who worked in fibre, later making significant forays in ceramic and bronze. Working intuitively, her hand-knotted sculptures draw upon her interest in the natural world and the pantheon of classical and folk deities. Initially wall based, her fibre sculptures were later suspended and free standing as they grew in complexity and scale. At a time when narrative painting dominated the discourse, Mukherjee remained committed to sculpture, never exhibiting her drawings and prints during her lifetime.
Mukherjee’s work forms part of numerous public collections, including British Museum, London; Cleveland Museum of Art, Cleveland; Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; Museum of Modern Art, New York; Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam; Tate, London, and Yorkshire Sculpture Park, Yorkshire.
