Mungo Thomson

Conceptual artist Mungo Thomson’s performances and multimedia works pay homage to everyday objects to transform the mundane. A University of California MFA graduate, Thomson has exhibited widely at institutions and biennials across the U.S. and Europe since the early 2000s. Highlights include the Whitney Biennial in 2008. Thomson has an extensive, eclectic body of work that traverses film, sculpture, photography, music, and installation. He is known for interventions such as “Mail,” presented at the Hammer Museum in 2018, in which he asked the museum to redirect incoming letters to the gallery space. The evolving, participatory nature of the piece, and tongue-in-cheek critique of institutional infrastructure, typifies Thomson’s work. He is also recognized for his “TIME” series, in which he silkscreens Time magazine covers onto full-length mirrors. Thomson’s work is in the collections of the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, the Walker Art Center, Museo Jumex, and the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles, among others.
