Nabir Yo

Nabir Yo’s practice involves an intense versatility that touches different art forms such as performance, fashion, and painting. This can be seen in usually large wall hangings and other installation pieces. In Nabir Yo’s world, art and fashion are inseparable. Her fusion of the two comes at a time where a fair number of African artists are struggling to deviate from western painting styles and utilize what’s readily available to them.
Materiality plays a big part in how she expresses herself through collage and quilting which is finished with minimal brush strokes to accentuate her figures.

After attending Weaver Bird Residency’s program for two months, she came out ambitiously to challenge the narrative on how young female Ugandan artists are perceived in this male dominated yet volatile creative industry. She does this through exploring especially bold female images that she clads in indefinite fashion which represents cultural diversity and inclusiveness for all human races.
