Narcis Kantardžić
Bosnian, b. 1958
Narcis Kantardžić (1958, Derventa) is a Bosnian-born painter whose work bridges the artistic movements of the former Yugoslavia and contemporary Slovenian art. A graduate of the Academy of Fine Arts in Sarajevo (1982), he co-founded the influential art collective Zvono, known for its street exhibitions and avant-garde experiments that energized Sarajevo's cultural scene in the 1980s.
After relocating to Celje, Slovenia, during the Balkan wars, Kantardžić focused on painting and graphic art. His work explores romantic and metaphysical landscapes, often centered around the recurring motif of the tower — from monumental fortresses to burning industrial complexes. His paintings evoke post-apocalyptic spaces, blending Romanticism's sublimity with Renaissance precision.
Kantardžić’s intricate play of light and shadow, combined with minimalist framing, enhances the atmospheric depth of his works. His earlier pieces experimented with diverse materials, while his recent art emphasizes refined brushwork and symbolic architectural elements.
He has exhibited widely in the former Yugoslavia, Slovenia, and internationally, including in London, Budapest, Ravenna, and Trieste. Kantardžić has also received numerous Slovenian awards and contributed to art education. He currently teaches at a drawing and painting school near his Celje studio.
Kantardžić’s timeless art offers a profound reflection on civilization, architecture, and the human condition, resonating with both classical and contemporary sensibilities.
