Working from sometimes-overlooked art historical references and sources—like newspaper clippings, everyday objects, and photographs—Neal Tait combines and transforms recognizable images into dreamlike, surrealistic scenes in his mesmerizing paintings and drawings. Heads and bodies, anthropomorphic forms, geometric shapes, and semi-recognizable objects morph and bleed into each other in his works, which balance abstraction and figuration, logic and absurdity, beauty and grotesquerie in tantalizing tension. As he describes: “I’m interested in creating something that, while recognizable, perhaps doesn’t relate to a realistic experience.”
