She Who Tells a Story: Women Photographers from Iran and the Arab World,
National Museum of Women in the Arts

A self-taught photographer, Newsha Tavakolian began working professionally in the Iranian press at the age of sixteen for the women’s daily newspaper Zan. By age twenty-one, she was traveling internationally to cover wars, natural disasters, and social conflicts in Iraq, Lebanon, Syria, Saudi Arabia, Pakistan, and Yemen. As a photographer, Tavakolian is particularly interested in women’s issues, especially the restrictions on women’s freedom, their lack of social mobility, and opportunity for self-expression in Iranian culture. Published in Time, Newsweek, National Geographic, and The New Yorker and exhibited in the Victoria and Albert Museum, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the British Museum, and Boston's Museum of Fine Arts, Tavokolian's work bridges the gap between documentary and art photography.
