British and Canadian, Est. 2004

Biography

In their video, performance, installation, and photography work, Nicholas & Sheila Pye blur the boundary between life and art, drawing on the influences of surrealism in film, 19th- and 20th-century portraiture, conceptual art, and narrative conventions in painting. A married couple, as well as artistic collaborators, they depict relationships in their work that illustrate all the vicissitudes of a mutually dependent dynamic as they negotiate themes of death, the supernatural, and the grotesque. “The work is about isolation, existentialism, but it’s not necessarily about our relationship,” says Nick, “Then again, how do you get away from it, when you’re using yourself in the work?”
