Nick Bodoin Biography
Nick's practice consists of large portraits painted and built with wood. This unorthodox approach steps outside of traditional techniques and blurs the boundaries between sculpture and painting with its 3-dimensional aspect in shape and layering.
At the center of Nick's work is the human gaze, which serves as a window into the complexities of human relationships. For Nick, eyes are the most captivating thing to observe and to paint, and there is nothing more powerful in the universe than the encounter of two people locking eyes with each other and the connection felt in doing so. He strives to capture the universal feeling and unexplainable exchange of
information, emotion, and energy felt in those moments.
His style and materials come together to create a balance between raw and re"ned, rough and intricate. The exposed wood intertwines with the paint strokes in a subtle dance, where we lose sight of where paint ends and wood begins. His medium connects to his small town origins and time spent building things around the family house, as well as manual labor on farms. Raw handcrafted materials have the
power to connect and ground us in a sense of reality, relatability, and the human experience.
The hidden series themes are comfort, hiding, stepping back, and how/what we choose to reveal about ourselves. We all have secrets and parts of ourselves that we don't easily share. Paradoxically, the mystery of this series draws us in and captures our curiosity even more. It speaks to the layers of humanity and how not everything about someone is instantly revealed. It reminds us to observe and listen, and that
time and connection reveal much more.
