Nick Nowicki
British, born 1968

Nick Nowicki distills appropriated graphic images and everyday observations into an “experience” on paper, canvas, or linen through editing, erasure, and repetition. “They are not representational illustration,” he explains, “but rather occur under the same conditions that govern human experience—unpredictability, limitation, and expression.” Doodle-like, the simplified images emerge from Nowicki’s imagination following a gestation period during which he refrains from drawing the image in question. Their sparsity—faces, if present at all, typically comprise closed eyes and a circle for a mouth while backgrounds are mostly blank—forces viewers to flesh out the narrative for themselves.
