"The place of my painting is the picture. My work is primarily based on the observation of what materially constitutes it: the stretcher and the canvas attached to it. But this canvas is special. Indeed, my canvas supports are gingham, madras or tartan fabrics, all colored orthogonal canvases. The grid pattern of my canvases, distorted by tension, is both an elementary physical expression and a particular image. Something is at play here, between the material and the iconic. Paradoxically, the deformation of the grid is proof that the canvas is properly stretched, offering the ideal flat surface for a painting. My painting begins at this point." Nicolas Chardon
