Nicole Cohen
American, born 1970

Though trained in painting and drawing, Nicole Cohen defers to video and digital media for their particular potential to distort time, scale, environment, and depth. Cohen uses these manipulations to investigate human interaction, notions of celebrity, social behavior, and rituals in public and private spaces—those imbued with “implied scripts of how to act,” as she describes. In some of her best known works, Cohen sets up a camera in front of a small set and video loop, such that a visitor could see himself occupying a range of different settings at different times, like historic sites or the artist’s own studio. In other works, Cohen overlays disparate scenes, like contemporary and historical sites, or interior and exterior environments.
