Noé León
Colombian, 1907–1978
Noé León, born in 1907 in Ocaña, Norte de Santander, was a self-taught Colombian artist. Throughout his life, he was deeply inspired by his Afro-Colombian roots, as well as the traditions and landscapes of his native region. León is considered the foremost exponent of primitivist art in Colombia.
León's works are characterized by a vivid chromatic palette, flattened perspectives, and simplified forms. Often, his paintings depicted rural scenes, everyday life, and religious themes, imbuing them with an atmosphere of enchantment and mysticism. León was a prolific artist who exhibited his work extensively throughout Colombia and abroad, and his paintings are held in numerous public and private collections.
Despite his success, León maintained a humble and dedicated attitude towards his art until his passing. He is remembered as a pioneer of primitivism in Colombia, whose oeuvre embodies a synthesis of traditional and contemporary elements, as well as a rich visual language that speaks to the spiritual and cultural essence of his country
