Biography

The deceased fowl that Noel Grunwaldt depicts in her watercolor paintings, prints, and silver sculptures come closer to embodying the notion of suspended life than of death and decay. Rendered delicately in beautiful, soft colors, the birds show no trace of violence or gruesomeness typically associated with death. Although not quite in flight, their open wings suggest movement, as illustrated in Untitled (Hawk #3) (2008), a painting in which a hawk seems to float up into a soft cloud or transform into an ethereal being, evoking the transience and fragility of life.
