Biography

Nuno de Campos has become known for using labor-intensive Old Master techniques to create his drawings and paintings with tinted washes and egg tempera. De Campos’s works are based on photographs of sitters taken in his studio, but with an emphasis on the subject’s posture and clothing. His drawings and paintings, similarly, typically feature a sitter’s torso, lap, and hands, though not their faces. Critics have variously characterized his works as still lifes, portraits, and conceptual narratives; de Campos, however, once explained that he thinks of these pieces as a hybrid of film stills and religious icons—speaking of the composition and choice of medium.
