Born in Incheon, Korea in 1979, Oh Suk Kuhn is a photographer based in the city of his birth. The artist captures and showcases representations of personal memories intertwined with the modern and contemporary history of Korea, particularly focusing on the city of Incheon where he spent his formative years. Epitomized by his documentation of the transformations of the interior and exterior spaces of Japanese-style houses in Korea, known as jeoksan houses or “enemy properties,” the artist is a weaver of counter memories that emerge from his photographic exploration of the times, memories, and cultural layers shaped by colonial rule, modernization, industrialization, and the Korean War.
Oh has a strong portfolio of solo exhibitions, including Incheon (2019, Incheon Urban History Museum & Space Beam, Incheon), From the Sea to Youth+Ash and Dust (2012, 179+180 Yeonji-dong, Jongno-gu, Seoul), and The Text Book (Chulsoo & Younghee) (2011, Base Gallery, Tokyo). Additionally, he has participated in various group exhibitions such as Soft and Weak Like Water (2023, Gwangju Biennale, Gwangju), We, on the Rising Wave (2022, Busan Biennale, Busan), Enemy Property (2021, Buyeon, Incheon), and Lesson Ø (2017, National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Korea, Gwacheon).
